Blood Bound- Mercy Thompson Book 2: Patricia Briggs

Recommend.

Amazon Summary:
A sorcerer-turned-vampire wreaks havoc on Washington’s Tri-Cities, causing death, destruction and a paranormal faceoff in the second of Briggs’s series featuring Mercy Thompson, a mechanic and “walker”: one who can turn into a coyote at will. After attempts by the paranormal community to destroy the malevolent sorcerer fail, Mercy finds herself pulled into the fray: though her werewolf and vampire friends are stronger than she, it turns out that Mercy’s abilities make her the only one in town who can save them all. While she discovers the truth about her powers, she also learns more about her past, and the werewolves who raised her. Though the romantic subplot-involving two rival werewolves, Alpha wolf Adam and Mercy’s roommate Samuel-fizzles, Briggs has a refreshing knack for imbuing her characters (even non-humans) with lived-in human qualities. When it gets going, this paranormal adventure story is engaging, but a flabby first-person narrative stunts the suspense.

Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices Book 1): Cassandra Clare

So I was a big fan of the Mortal Instruments series so I was happy to hear that she was continuing the whole series with a new set of characters, set in an earlier time.
I really enjoyed the book, although I must say I liked the first one better. But this was just the first book. I think I just liked the lead male better in the Mortal Instruments series than this book, but I’m open 🙂

I would give it 4 stars and recommend it, especially if you liked the Mortal Instruments.

Bearers of the Black Staff: Terry Brooks

I was so excited when I read that Terry was going to be continuing his Shannara series. He has written them in a confusing order.
The Shannara Series is set in the future (although it seems more like the past) and has like 17 books to it.
Then it goes WAAAAAYYYYY back to the Word and Void series.
Then we start connecting it all with the Genesis of Shannara series.

This is after the Genesis series but before the Shannara series.
Need more of an explanation? Here you go:

Word & Void

  • Running with the Demon
  • A Knight of the Word
  • Angel Fire East

Pre-Shannara
Genesis of Shannara

  • Armageddon’s Children
  • The Elves of Cintra
  • The Gypsy Morph

    • The Secret of the Sword – last 1/3 of The Sword of Shannara
  • The Elfstones of Shannara
  • The Wishsong of Shannara

A Shannara Short Story

  • Indomitable – An epilogue to The Wishsong of Shannara

A Shannara Graphic Novel

Confused yet? Well don’t be.
Just start with this trilogy and if you like it, go from there.
It’s very Lord of the Ring-esq and a great read. If you are like me and get attached to characters and series, this is great because there are SO many of them!

Anyways, I was so happy that Terry decided to keep the series going awhile longer and so this book just came out.

It was great. I loved it!
5 stars and totally recommend!

Beautiful Creatures: Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl

Here was a nice, easy read that has lots of unrequited love and fantasy all mixed in.
I’m a little torn because although I found myself thinking about this book when I was not reading it, I also was not entirely in love with the book. It captured me, but didn’t grip me.

I think it was because I just felt the main characters were too young. I wished it would be have been centered around turning 18 instead of 16. They just felt too young for me to truly believe their devoted love. Does that betray my age/cynicism? 🙂

I did like the fact that the main narrator was a guy and not a girl. That’s pretty unusual in YA books, and I enjoyed reading from the guy’s perspective for a change.

The next one in the series comes out in October and I’m planning on reading that one too. I’m thinking the series may evolve and at least the characters won’t be jail-bate. 😉

Anyways, I really did like it though!

Summary: Ethan Wate is struggling to hide his apathy for his high school “in” crowd in small town Gatlin, South Carolina, until he meets the determinedly “out” Lena Duchannes, the girl of his dreams (literally–she has been in his nightmares for months). What follows is a smart, modern fantasy–a tale of star-crossed lovers and a dark, dangerous secret. Beautiful Creatures is a delicious southern Gothic that charms you from the first page, drawing you into a dark world of magic and mystery until you emerge gasping and blinking, wondering what happened to the last few hours (and how many more you’re willing to give up). To tell too much of the plot would spoil the thrill of discovery, and believe me, you will want to uncover the secrets of this richly imagined dark fantasy on your own

Re-Read Eclipse and Breaking Dawn

I just re-read Eclipse and Breaking Dawn since the Eclipse movie is coming out tomorrow and I am headed to a Twilight Marathon at our local movie theater. It’s going to be so much fun! 🙂

Anyways, I just had to say that I once again got sucked in.
I wish I knew what kind of crazy voodoo magic Stephenie Meyer has that causes so many people to become so absorbed in her stories. I want that! I wish I had a story like that to tell.

Once again, reading those books I feel destined to write.

Anyways, if you haven’t read the Twilight series and you like fantasy books, go for it! Don’t just not read it because of the hype.
If you’ve already read them and are going to see the movie, re-read Eclipse! But then again if you re-read Eclipse you’ll re-read Breaking Dawn and POSSIBLY the entire series. You will get sucked into their world for sure.

That’s it. I just thought I should keep you updated with what I’m reading, even though I’ve already read them both.
