When drafting evolves

So I decided to go ahead and start on the Contemporary I had plotted out. Great story, but more importantly, I was already loving my characters and their tragic childhoods.

I started writing, but the things is, it evolved into a mystery, which then changed the character motivations, which then completely changed the backgrounds, which then completely changed the characters, which means… TOTALLY starting over!

But this new story seems to be flowing easier. I just need to work more on my new characters because I still want to save “those” characters for this contemporary that I know I’ll write one day. But not today. Today shall be a mysterious mystery with some kissing. Because kissing is super important for mysteries.

I swear I read!

I am so behind in my book recommendations! Like I just saw that I haven’t posted a recommendation since October.

Oops! 🙂

I did move across the ocean so I guess I have an excuse, but still… bad me.

I started to catch up… but then I was like, nope. Not gonna happen. I’m writing a new book and don’t have the time!

SO I’m not going to cloud this feed with a a dozen or so posts and instead will just post my recent favorites. I’ve obviously read far more than this in the last seven months, but these are the standouts.

Allegiant by Veronica Roth

I’m not going to lie, I was devastated by the ending, but I just LOVED this series so much!

All our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrell

I loved this book so much! It was extremely fast-paced and kept me spinning the entire time. It was really fresh and awesome. Totally recommend!

Champion by Marie Lu

What a fantastic ending to this trilogy. I couldn’t have wished for a better ending. Seriously YES! Read this trilogy!

Under the Never Sky trilogy by Veronica Rossi

I really enjoyed this series so much! You’ll find yourself so wrapped up in the characters and the story that you’ll zip through this series incredibly quick!

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancy

I thought this was a pretty great take on what can be considered a hard to re-invent the wheel genre. Loved it and totally recommend!

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

This was a really great book that I am totally pumped for the series! I thought Pierce Brown did such a great job of building this in-depth, detailed world and how he crafted his main character. Loved!

The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton

Kate is an incredible story teller and this story was true to form. A great and haunting book with an ending that totally caught me by surprise!

Reboot by Amy Tintera

This was a really great and fun book that had me hooked pretty quick into it. I like Amy’s writing style as it sets the pace at a fast speed and doesn’t let up. I’ll definitely be reading the next book!

We were Liars by E. Lockhart

What a beautiful haunting book. It was definitely one of those books that draws you in and makes you sink so far inside that you don’t look up until you turn the last page. I read it in one sitting and loved it (though I totally guessed the ending) 🙂

Man this book reminded me of high school even though my high school was nothing like this. Rainbow Rowell just captures what it’s like to be an angst filled teen so well! I loved this book! Like LOVED!!!!

My Thoughts:

I haven’t liked a YA scifi this much since Beth Revis’ Across the Universe series. I really enjoyed this series and I can’t wait for the next one!

How to decide what to write next…

Since I finished revising my YA book and started the query process… I’ve had the hardest time focusing on my next story.

It feels strange to leave my “friends” that I know so well and start up with someone new. It’s also hard to pull my head out of that world. Those back stories that I crafted, but will probably never tell. Character idiosyncrasies that I find endearing.

But then, I remembered what my old professor told me:

So I started a story… then I started another story… the problem is now I just can’t seem to choose between them. Which one should I flesh out first?

Regardless of how my journey to publication evolves, I’ve discovered the joy of losing myself in a story of my own making. It’s an addiction I don’t think I’ll ever be able to shake.
